Scenario #1: Traveling to a foreign country
All of us enjoy traveling. And more often than not, we face problems with communicating with locals in a foreign country. We are unaware with the dangers of certain areas in a foreign countries and face possibilities of losing our way while traveling. How could knowledge management be helpful to us?
Solution: Knowing the different avenues to Locate
and Capture knowledge will help us better bridge the language barrier. Through commonly used tools like Wiki's, Blogs or even Television, others with a better understanding about other countries would share their experiences with one another and give valuable advices and warnings for new travelers. Furthermore, basic foreign languages could also be picked up quickly to help us have a better traveling experience and reduce the risk of getting lost or getting conned in a foreign country.
Scenario #2: Facing an urgent problem
We constantly face with problems that requires im
mediate solutions. Problems like "How to write a good resume?", "How to play tennis?" or even "How to write a good report?" would need professional training and lectures to master these skills. But given a short amount of time, how can knowledge management solve these issues?
Solution: Using simple technologies like Podcast and Videocast, we can have a crash course with regards to what we need. These tools provides both visual and audio effects, which allows others to Share their knowledge to others effectively. These would in turn improve our Efficiency (although not as well as professional training), without taking 2 hours a week to become competent in certain areas.
Scenario #3: Buying a new Personal Computer
Given the technological advances today, it is highly possible that we would need to upgrade our computers for our own entertainment or work. But how many of us really understand the different components that makes a better computer? How can I personalize a computer that is not only within my budget, but caters to my needs?
Solution: Through online forums, we can find reviews of ne
w products that are made available to us. If we gather enough knowledge, we can Create a personal computer that we want. This Innovation process
would help us understand not only developments in the I.T industry, but also help us make good decisions based on experiences from others.
Based on the three examples given, we can identify the process that sharing can help to create more knowledge, which in turn, result in more sharing. Its almost like a cycle that is described as shown below:

Sharing would occur when there is a flow of people with lesser knowledge than others. Ultimately, it would result in an equal amount of knowledge in all who shares with one another. This would lead to a need to find higher levels of knowledge through experiences, interactions, group think tanks and so forth. As more knowledge is created, there would again be a flow of knowledge from people with more knowledge to those with lesser. This would result in a cycle that promotes the development of knowledge and the culture of sharing.
You would probably be thinking to yourself if this is really useful to you and how would it benefit you from sharing knowledge and gaining more knowledge. Again, we would like to present a simple diagram to illustrate our point:

Through knowledge gained from outside sources from sharing sessions with others, we would be able to gain more knowledge with regards to any issues that you might face. With the help of the company's internal knowledge gained through the years in the business as well as knowledge that the employees might accumulate while working would help to make you become a more productive person. As your personnel capabilities improve, so will your performance in your job. This would translate to a brighter future in your career, which would be beneficial to you. Ultimately, if a culture of sharing is created in communities of interest outside your work environment as well as within organizations, it would be beneficial to those who are able to properly capture and leverage on these knowledge to enhance your own competencies.

Hi guys, nice blog there. :)
I feel that there's alot of potential for knowledge sharing using the mode of videocast, as students/employees can acquire knowledge and pace their learning at the setting of their homes/cafe - relaxed environment = more learning takes place, what do you think? In fact it is quite widely used in NUS & NTU, pity that SMU didn't really embrace this platform.
